Plastic and Waste Reduction
It’s estimated that by 2050, there could be more plastic in the ocean than fish. While we encourage recycling efforts, we also strive to reduce our reliance on single-use plastics to prevent plastic waste in the first place.

Plastic-Free Water Aisle
We were the first grocery store on the west coast to eliminate plastic water bottles from our shelves. Hydrate responsibly!
Result: 16.6 million plastic water bottles kept out of the environment since 2019.

Wooden Nickel Program
When you bring your own reusable grocery bags, you get a wooden nickel to donate to one of four non-profit organizations.
Result: 352,875 bags saved from entering the environment last year, and X amount donated to the community.

Plastic-Free Checkout
In 2008, we removed all plastic grocery bags from checkout, and we offer 100% recyclable paper bags.
Result: Prevented millions of plastic bags from being created and entering the environment.

TagBack
Twist ties, juice bar tags, and Paktech can carriers usually end up in the landfill. But you can drop yours off at the front of any of our stores, and we’ll send them to a specialized recycler that upcycles them into furniture and pavement.
Result: 400 pounds of twist ties and juice bar tags kept out of the landfill and upcycled each year.

Compostable Packaging
We now offer all compostable packaging in our produce department, salad bar, and hot bar. Look out for our new compostable juice and coffee cups in 2025!
Result: Hundreds of single-use plastic packaging items kept out of the landfill and our environment every day.

Film Plastic Recycling
Soft plastics like pallet wrap and bubble wrap aren’t curbside recyclable and often end up in the landfill or oceans. We divert all of our film plastic and recycle it through Plastic Beach who turns it into other plastic products.
Result: 10,400 pounds of film plastic recycled last year and kept out of the landfill.
