Grocery Merchandiser-Trainer

Reports To: Grocery Director
Pay Range: G&A Wage Scale

General Purpose: To maintain the consistency and uniformity between the departments in each of the stores in the areas of operational procedures, product selection and merchandising. Responsible for all department sets, merchandising new items and resets as needed. To support the Store Managers as well as the Department Managers in each store by enforcing policy, procedures and protocol and assisting with training and operations.

Essential Duties:
Training Responsibilities

  • Training and coaching Department Managers and employees.
  • Training and coaching Department Managers and employees.
  • Support in the hiring and training of new Department Managers.
  • Fill in and serve as Department Manager in the absence of a manager.
  • Ensure that all operational procedures are being followed properly and uniformly in all stores.
  • Maintain consistent communication and follow-through with Department managers.
  • Create and maintain Department training manuals and programs.
  • Assist Department Managers in developing merchandising skills and in the building of end caps.
  • Support departments with maintaining bottom-line gross margins and inventory levels; investigate and make corrections when targets are not being reached.
  • Provide support, feedback and input to Buyers, Grocery Director, and Store Managers with operational issues within the departments.

Category Management:

  • Assist the Buyers and Grocery Director with the execution of category management projects, supervising the reset crews and adhering to the schematics provided.
  • Responsible for setting new items, pulling discontinued items and modifying sets as needed.
  • Responsible for general maintenance of day to day shelf merchandising of sets.
  • Work with Buyers and Grocery Director to evaluate products with an eye to product diversity and selection while continually meeting all company product standards.
  • Provide support, feedback and input to Buyers and Grocery Director on any merchandising issues within the department.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Provide general departmental support as needed.
  • Assist Buyers and Grocery Director with paperwork for scanning: (tags, signs, etc).
  • Research and approve product trainings for the department staff.
  • Support Department Managers regarding scanning procedures: (tags, signs, etc).
  • Support the quarterly inventories of the departments.
  • Help facilitate Department Manager meetings a minimum of one each quarter.

Qualifications:

  • Must have a minimum 2 years experience of both successful merchandising and as a highly effective Department Manager.
  • Proven leadership and team-building skills with the ability to constructively address performance issues.
  • Ability to establish and maintain vendor and broker relations.
  • Ability to travel between stores and work unusual hours in order to perform sets and provide Departmental support.
  • Possess strong organizational skills and ability to be self-motivated and autonomous.
  • Intermediate math skills.
  • Must be computer literate with experience in Windows, Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • Natural foods knowledge and industry connections very helpful.

Physical Demands:

  • Able to work in refrigerated working environment.
  • Ability to hear and speak clearly in order to communicate with customers, vendors and staff.
  • Ability to squat, kneel, bend and reach above head in order to merchandise and stock in the department.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Work Environment:

  • Approximately 75% of time on sales floor (retail setting) and 25% of time in an administrative environment.
