Director of Operations

General Purpose: To effectively oversee the operations of multiple stores (maintaining financial targets, outstanding customer service, staff member satisfaction, excellence in merchandising and store presentation, and a safe/secure working and shopping environment). To support, train and develop effective store managers. Partner with the COO to develop operational strategies for the organization.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Effectively train and develop Store/Asst Store Managers in the following areas: Margins (including Shrink), Inventory, Labor Budgets, Sales Projections, Merchandising, Policies and procedures.
  • Effectively manage the performance of Store/Asst Store Managers to ensure consistent follow-through on store/departmental policies and procedures, and to achieve store and departmental goals.
  • Maximize Sales and Gross Profits, while controlling costs and maintaining budgets for operations, supplies and expenses.
  • Communicate operational strategies to store managers and provide support in carrying out the strategies.
  • Participate in developing the strategies for the Buyers by the COO and then support the carrying out of those strategies at store level.
  • Maintain company’s product standards and practices.
  • Manage store inventory by minimizing out-of-stocks and excessive inventory, deleting slow moving products, and effective stocking, as well as overseeing the monthly/quarterly store inventory necessary for financial reporting.
  • Effectively oversee Jimbo’s Facilities Manager and maintenance team.
  • Oversee all personnel issues in accordance with established human resources procedures, including staff hiring (except office staff), compensation, training, reviews, disciplinary action, and terminations.
  • Work with Human Resources on successful Succession Planning and staff improvement plans.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with all staff and management (departmental and operational).
  • Ensure compliance with governmental policies, i.e. health department. OSHA, and weights and measures.
  • Maintain a safe and hazard-free environment through regular cleaning, repair and maintenance to the store.
  • Maintain a high standard of customer service throughout the store.
  • Work with the Store/Asst Store Managers to continually improve the operations of the stores thorough innovation and refinement.
  • Maintain regular communication with COO and owner (as appropriate) on goals, objectives, projects and issues.
  • Effectively complete all administrative tasks accurately and in a timely fashion (reports, projections, invoices, schedules, as well as phone calls and correspondence to vendors and customers).
  • Able to assume the role of a Store Manager as needed to cover vacations or vacancies.


  • Minimum 3-5 years of successful experience as a retail Store Manager, preferably in natural foods.
  • Strong interpersonal skills (oral and written communication, listening skills, patience & diplomacy)
  • Proven leadership skills: honesty, integrity, consistency, and ability to foster teamwork.
  • Willingness and ability to make difficult decisions and ability to remain calm during crisis situations.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks: delegate, prioritize, and effectively manage time.
  • Intermediate math skills (‘actuals’ vs. budgets with regards to sales, labor and margins, etc.).
  • Ability to analyze financial reports and make operational corrections in order to achieve financial goals.
  • Ability to travel between stores.
  • Must be computer literate with experience in Windows, Outlook Express, Word and Excel.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs throughout any assigned shift.

Physical Demands:

  • Able to work periodically in refrigerated working environment.
  • Ability to hear and speak clearly to communicate with customers, vendors and staff.
  • Ability to squat, kneel, bend an reach above head in order to stock/merchandise in stores
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Work Environment: Approximately 25% of time on sales floor (retail setting) and 75% of time in an administrative, office environment
