Jimbo’s local commitment to organic farming, schools and non-profit organizations will continue to spread its roots into the downtown area and surrounding communities. The newest Jimbo’s…Naturally! is expected to boost the local economy by bringing more than 100 new jobs to the area.

“I opened my original store in North Park in 1984 and sold it in 1997. Since then, I have always wanted to return to that area or downtown. So it is with great excitement and anticipation that we will open our doors to downtown San Diego on October 16th. Our entire Jimbo’s team is raring to go and service downtown’s residents and businesses with the highest quality organic foods. We hope that we will also have a positive impact in the area, as we continue to work with various charities and non-profits to support a number of social causes. As evidence of that, we are proud to partner with Connections Housing, as we fully understand that homelessness in San Diego is a huge problem,” said Jim “Jimbo” Someck, founder and owner of Jimbo’s…Naturally!.

Jimbo’s…Naturally! Contributes $10,000 to Yes on 522

San Diego, CA – August 1, 2013 – In its continuing effort to support the labeling of
genetically engineered foods, Jimbo’s…Naturally! has contributed $10,000 to the Yes on
522, Washington State’s GMO Labeling Initiative.

Yes on 522 provides Washington shoppers with more information about what’s in the
groceries they buy so that they can make the best food decisions for their families. More
than 350,000 signatures were collected to get I-522 on the November 2013 ballot—
second highest number of signatures gathered for an Initiative to the Legislature in state
history.

Jim “Jimbo” Someck, owner of Jimbo’s…Naturally! strongly supported Prop 37, the
California Right to Know 2012 Ballot Initiative to label genetically engineered foods sold
in grocery stores in California. Though Prop 37 did not pass, it set the wheels in motion
for other states to forge ahead such as Washington State. “We are happy to make this
contribution to the Yes on 522 campaign. We strongly believe that all consumers have
the right to know what is in their food and we hope that our financial support of this
important initiative will result in not only making it happen in Washington, but will
ultimately result in a national law,” said Jim “Jimbo” Someck.

Jimbo’s…Naturally! continues to grow in San Diego as we open our next location in
Downtown San Diego-Westfield Horton Plaza. Opening is slated for late summer of
2013.

Jimbo’s…Naturally! Named Diligent Dozen – Top 12 Grocer by ORCA

Diligent Dozen LogoThe Organic Retailer and Consumer Alliance (ORCA) named Jimbo’s…Naturally! as one of the top 12 GMO Right-to-Know Grocers, also known as the “Diligent Dozen”.

The “Diligent Dozen” winning stores are those grocers who are leading the natural food industry by working with manufacturers and local producers to transition to non-GMO ingredients and by advocating for GMO labeling.

Jimbo’s…Naturally! is honored to receive this recognition and hopes to inspire more retailers to follow suit.

GMO Practices

Manufacturer Communication

Jimbo’s…Naturally! is one of the country’s pioneer Non-GMO grocer activists and organic advocates. The company has persuaded a number of manufacturers to remove suspect products from their foods, resulting in those companies either going organic or pursuing Non-GMO Project verification. Other stores have also contacted Jimbo’s…Naturally! for advice on going in the same direction.

Product Removal Process

Store products that were grandfathered in are being weeded out and replaced department by department. The company expects this process to be completed within 6-12 months. Sometimes products are dropped immediately, or offered only until there is a readily available replacement. Providing GMO-Free supplements is going to be challenging, the company said.

Labeling

Jimbo’s…Naturally! has several thousand Non-GMO Project labeled products on their store shelves. The stores are Non-GMO Project Participating Retailers, and Jimbo Someck is a member of the retail advisory board of the Non GMO-Project. Jimbo’s…Naturally! donated $10,000 to support Prop 37 in 2012.
